MONROE, La. - Texas-Arlington head coach Eddie McCarter wanted a fresh look to the Mavericks and he found it in Monroe, La.
UTA's freshman foursome of Baron Sauls, Myles Guidry, Rodrick Epps and Larry Posey combined for 36 points to lead the Mavericks to a 63-51 win over Louisiana-Monroe in a Southland Conference men's basketball game here Saturday.
UTA (12-11, 6-6) was led in scoring by Posey with a career-high tying 15 points. Steven Thomas, the SLC's second leading scorer and top rebounder, played just four minutes in the first half, but scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half. Jarrett Howell added 11.
ULM (7-16, 1-11) got 17 points from RoShon Jacobs and 10 from Daryl Mason.
"I thought the energy of the starters wasn't where it needed to be (in the first half)," said McCarter. "I liked the way our freshmen were trying to be aggressive on the defensive end of the floor."
UTA built as mush as a 10-point lead in the second half, 48-38, after a layin by Thomas with 9:24 to play in the game.
But UTA went scoreless for the 4:51 and ULM scored the next seven points on a three-pointer by Cecil Hood with 8:30 remaining and a pair of Daryl Mason buckets to make it 48-45 with 6:31 to play. But the field goal by Mason was the last by ULM until 27 seconds to play as UTA slowly pulled away for the win.
A put back by Posey followed by a driving layup from Epps gave UTA a 53-47 lead with 3:52 to play. UTA extended the lead to 63-49 after two Howell free throws.
In the first half, UTA took advantage of a slow start by ULM to take a 32-28 halftime lead. The Indians made 2-of-11 field goals to begin the game.
UTA returns to action Thursday at Stephen F. Austin. Tip-off is at 8:15 p.m.
