SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Texas-Arlington coach Eddie McCarter has 12 players on the roster, but there were not enough fingers to keep Texas-San Antonio from pouring it on in the second half of a 96-78 win in a Southland Conference men's basketball game Saturday night here.
The win gives UTSA (13-12, 8-6) a shot at a top four berth in the upcoming O'Reilly Auto parts/SLC Men's Tournament. UTA (12-13, 6-8) put itself in a must-win situation against Texas State and Nicholls State in order to make the postseason tournament.
UTA was led in scoring by Steven Thomas with 17 points and 12 rebounds. He became the 17th player to score 1,000 career points at UTA. Rodrick Epps scored 15 points, Stephen Floyd had 13 and Brady Dawkins added 10. UTSA was led by Raphael Posey with 23, 21 from Andre Owens, Justin Harbert added 13 and 11 from Ray Selvage.
UTSA made 28 of 36 free throws in the second half as they outscored the Mavs 63-43 in the second half.
UTA gave up the first four points of the second half to give UTSA a 37-35 lead after a jumper by Owens with 19:39 to play in the game. UTA answered with a 12-4 run over the next four minutes for a 47-41 lead after a Jarrett Howell free throw with 15:04 left to play.
UTA went on a 9-0 spurt to take the lead for good. A put back by Owens and six straight field goals from Millsap gave UTSA a 49-47 lead. Fuqua added a free throw with 12:14 to play for a 50-47 edge.
The Roadrunner lead swelled to 15, 70-55, with a 10-0 UTSA run that included back-to-back 3-pointers - one by David President and Posey, two President free throws and two free throws from Harbert.
UTA made a last run with a four-point-play from Dawkins to cut the lead to 77-71 with 2:51 to play, but the Mavs missed a couple of layups on their next possession and could get no closer.
There were eight lead changes in the first half as UTA grabbed a 35-33 edge at intermission. Back-to-back three-pointers by Howell and Brady Dawkins in the final 1:15 of the half matched UTA's largest lead of the half, 35-31. But Posey responded with a bucket with :44 seconds to play to cut the lead to 35-33. The Mavs out-rebounded the taller Roadrunners 24-12 in the first half.
