MAVS FALL 8-5 TO #11 BAYLOR

April 26, 2005

Box Score

WACO, Texas - Baylor shortstop Paul Witt went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and second baseman Michael Griffin drove in three runs as the No. 11 Bears defeated Texas-Arlington 8-5 Tuesday evening at Baylor Ballpark. The loss was the first for the Mavs against BU this season in three games.

The Bears (28-16) got on the board in the third inning as Witt singled to left field and scored on Griffin's fifth home run of the season to left center field.

BU added a run in the fourth inning as Kevin Sevigny singled to center field as Joe Newman lost his footing, allowing Kevin Russo to score from second after reaching on a fielder's choice.

UTA (22-23) got a pair of runs back in the fifth inning as Boomer Welles singled to center field and Justin Stevens followed with a single through the right side. Brett Fenner put down a sacrifice bunt in front of the plate, but hustled down the line to beat the throw and turn it into a base hit. When Griffin couldn't handle the throw at first, Welles hustled in to score from third. Aaron Batlle put down a sacrifice bunt and Kyle Thomason drove in the second run with a groundout to second base.

The Bears got a run back in the home half of the inning as Zach Dillon hit his first home run of the season just over the right field wall.

The Mavs answered right back as Brock Wilson ripped a double just inside the bag at third for his first career double, chasing BU starter Jeff Mandel from the game. After advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt from Newman, Welles drove in a run with a groundout to short.

BU busted the game open in the sixth inning as Russo beat out an infield single to third and Chase Gerdes walked. After a failed sac bunt attempt, Witt plated two runs with a double down the left field line and Griffin scored Witt with a single up the middle.

UTA crept back in the game in the seventh as Batlle hit a one-out single to center field and Thomason followed with a walk. After advancing on a wild pitch, the first run scored on a fielding error by the third baseman and the second run on a Ryan Nelson single to right center.

The Bears pushed a run across in the eighth as Kevin Sevigny singled up the middle and stole second before scoring on Kyle Reynolds two-out single to center field.

Dillon Gee (4-5) took the loss as he allowed four runs on eight hits in five innings of work. Mandel (1-0) picked up the victory as he allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits in five innings of work.

Welles led the Mavs offense as he collected a pair of hits and raised his season average to .309. Nathan Warrick went 0-for-5 at the plate and put a halt to his 15-game hit streak.

The Mavs return to action on Friday as they take to the road for a Southland Conference series against Nicholls State. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Ray E. Didier Field.
