STANFORD, Calif. - The UTA Mavericks stumbled through the back-nine of the Stanford Golf Course, shooting 11-over-par en route to an opening day score of 17-over-par 297 after round one of the NCAA West Regionals Division I Men's Golf Tournament here Thursday.
UTA is tied for 21st place, trailing leader Brigham Young who shot two-under-par 278. Pepperdine was the only other school to shoot under par and sits one stroke back at 279. The nation's top-ranked team, Nevada-Las Vegas, carved out a one-over 281 for third place.
BYU's Oscar Alvarez shot a sparkling round of seven-under-par 63 for a three stroke lead over the field.
Junior golfer Tyrone Mordt could not overcome a triple-bogey on the 473-yard, par-4, no. 12 and finished the back nine four-over-par for a 75.
Sophomore Marc Campbell had the Mavs best round of the day with a two-over 72. Campbell bogeyed nos. 1 and 16, both par-5s, during the early morning round.
The Southland Conference's "Player of the Year," Jordan Krantz, had an opening round 75. He bogeyed the first two holes of the day and four of the first six holes before settling down for a five-over-par score.
Junior Jeff Murray also bogeyed the first two holes of the day and three of the first five before finishing the day with a 75.
Freshman Zack Reeves had six bogeys and a double-bogey to finish with an opening round 77.
Play continues Friday with the final round slated for Saturday. The top 10 teams in the West Regionals will advance to the NCAA Championships June 1-3 near Baltimore, Md.
