MAVERICKS CONTINUE TO STRUGGLE

MONROE, La. - The Texas-Arlington volleyball team dropped its fourth straight match, falling to Louisiana-Monroe, 30-27, 30-28, 23-30, 30-27, in Southland Conference play Friday evening at Brown Gymnasium.

Up 22-19 in game four, the Indians used a 4-2 run to force a Texas-Arlington timeout. The Mavericks came out of the timeout and took the first two points, but Louisiana-Monroe rallied to take the next two, and a 28-23 lead and force yet another timeout by the Mavericks. Texas-Arlington four straight points, but the Lady Indians finished the game with two points.

In game one, Texas-Arlington (2-10, 0-3 SLC) started off slow, falling behind 10-3 to force the Mavericks into a timeout. The Indians' Eveta Gambrah tallied two kills during the run. After the timeout, the Mavericks settled down and used a 14-7 run to tie the score, 17-17. Texas-Arlington used three blocks and two kills each from both Ashley Van Antwerp and sophomore Torie Dacus. However, Louisiana-Monroe (6-8, 2-3 SLC) rallied back to take the first game behind three kills from Brittany Winters, 30-27.

Game two saw the Mavericks jump out to a 7-1 lead behind two Van Antwerp kills. Texas-Arlington kept at it, taking a 27-21 lead. Sophomore Dani Johnson came off of the bench to register four kills and provide some timely passing. However, the Lady Indians were not to be denied, winning nine of the next 10 points to take game two, 30-28.

In game three, both teams traded points knotting the score, 22-22. From there the Mavericks took over, winning eight of the next nine points to take game three, 30-23. Johnson had four kills, and senior Melissa Marek added five kills to lead Texas-Arlington. The Mavericks hit .320 during the game.

Van Antwerp led the Mavericks with 17 kills and also tallied 19 kills. Sophomore Emily Nedderman dished out 48 assists, while junior Ashley Smith had a game-high 27 kills.

Megan Gloor led the Lady Indians with 16 kills, while Darci Mika had 54 assists. Sei Hee Wang registered 23 kills.

Texas-Arlington will continue on its two-match road trip when they travel to take on Northwestern St. (3-7, 2-2 SLC) in Natchitoches, La. on Saturday. The Southland Conference matchup will begin at 4 p.m. at Prather Coliseum. The Mavericks have never lost to the Lady Demons, winning 33 straight matches.

NOTES: The Mavericks lost their first-ever match to Louisiana-Monroe, they had won 38 straight matches ... this was the first time the Lady Indians won a game against Texas-Arlington since 1996 ... Van Antwerp registered her 29th career double-double
