THOMPSON'S CAREER-DAY HELPS MAVS TO EASY VICTORY

ARLINGTON, Texas - Junior Tojjinay Thompson scored 13 of her career-high 20 points in the second half as Texas-Arlington was never threatened in a 78-41 victory over Lamar Saturday afternoon at Texas Hall.

UTA (10-5, 4-0) wasted no time in building an early advantage as after both teams exchanged baskets to start the game, Melanie Lane converted a layup inside and stole the inbounds to make the lead 6-2.

The two baskets by Lane were just the start of 19-3 run that put the Mavs ahead 19-5 just out of the 12 minute media timeout. Maryann Abanobi hit the Mavs first three of the half and after a Tojjinay Thompson layup, Terra Wallace added another triple. Thompson hit the the third three during the run before Abanobi grabbed an offensive rebound and put it up and in.

Audrea Samuel hit the Lady Cardinals second field goal of the half at the 10:48 mark, putting an end to a 8:18 drought without a field goal.

Abanobi would hit her second triple of the half and Lane and Ashley Bobb would convert inside to push the advantage to 19 points.

A quick 9-0 run would push the lead to its largest of the half at 28 points before the Lady Cardinals would trim the deficit to 39-15 at recess. Wallace was the catalyst of the run as she scored five points and Bobb and Candice Champion each added a bucket.

Thompson took control of the game in the second half as she hit three straight three-pointers and added a pair of baskets inside to help push the advantage to 53-20 with 14:30 left.

Wallace would help keep the lead at 32 points as she scored seven quick points to put UTA ahead 63-31 at the 7:28 mark.

UTA would clear the bench and Champion would again shine as she finished the game with six points and four rebounds. Tiffeny Riles scored four points and Ashley Cole added three off the bench to help the Mavs to the 78-41 victory.

Thompson was joined in double figures by Wallace's 15 points, Abanobi's 12 and Bobb's 10. Wallace added a game-high eight rebounds and four assists. LaToya Carson led LU with 24 points.

For the game, UTA shot 29-for-61 (.475) from the field and and 9-for-19 (.474) from behind the arc. LU was limited to just 11-for-42 (.262) from the field and committed 17 turnovers.

The Mavs return to action on Jan. 19 as they take tot he road to face Southeastern La. at 7 p.m. at the University Center.
