MAVS REBOUND FOR 56-34 VICTORY

Jan. 28, 2006

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Texas - Maryann Abanobi scored a team-high 16 points and Terra Wallace added 14 points, five assists and three steals as Texas-Arlington rebounded from its first conference loss of the season with a 56-34 victory over Sam Houston State Saturday evening at Texas Hall.

UTA (13-6, 7-1) got the first points of the game as Terra Wallace hit a three-pointer from the left wing, but quickly fell behind as they hit just two of their first 11 shots.

SHSU (7-12, 2-6) gained the lead as they got back-to-back field goals from Jamie Davison and Stephanie Trachier. The lead would grow to 7-3 after a pair of free throws from Britney Harris and one from Adah Wells.

UTA would respond with a second three-pointer from Wallace and steal and an old-fashioned three-point play from Wallace to give the Mavs the lead.

The Bearkats would tie the score on a layup from Wells before the Mavs would regain the lead for good on three free throws from Maryann Abanobi.

The three free throws were just the start of an 11-0 run that saw the Mavs surge to a 20-9 advantage at the 5:50 mark. Abanobi would continue with another triple, followed by a Melanie Lane free throw, Wallace jumper and Kristi Dudley putback.

The Kats would get as close as nine points at the 3:11 mark, but the Mavs would score the final six points to take a 28-13 lead into recess. Abanobi's second three-pointer of the half, a Jamie Buxkemper free throw and a Tojjinay Thompson follow rounded out the scoring.

The 6-0 run would quickly turn into a 17-2 run as the Mavs seized control right out of the locker room and led 39-15 with 15:08 remaining. Ashley Bobb sparked the offense as she hit two-straight three-pointers from the top of the key and Thompson added three points.

The lead would remain around 24 points for the next few minutes before the Kats would score nine-straight points to trim the deficit to 15 points. Three-pointers from Jamie Barr and Kendall Homesley sparked the run.

UTA responded with another three-pointer from Bobb and a step-back triple from Wallace as the shot clock was winding down to push the advantage back to 19 points.

The lead would grow back to 24-points as Abanobi hit her third three-pointer of the game and later hit a baseline jumper after Thompson hit a pair of free throws.

SHSU's final points came on a short jumper from Morgan Collom with 2:15 left before Buxkemper closed out the scoring with a driving layup for the 56-34 final.

Bobb and Thompson each added nine points for the Mavs and Abanobi, Bobb and Wallace each had three three-pointers in the game. Dudley led the Mavs on the glass with nine boards, six offensive, and Lane added seven and three blocks. UTA outrebounded SHSU 17-6 on the offensive end. Wells led SHSU with seven points.

The Mavs return to action on Feb. 2 as they welcome McNeese State to Texas Hall. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
