UT Arlington Head Softball Coach Debbie Nichols-Hedrick likes what she sees so far this fall season.
The Mavericks received strong pitching from junior Laura Jones and freshmen Cara Hulme and Heather Fortenberry while hitters Amanda Swofford, Kristin Moore and Katie Jones collected three hits each in leading the Mavericks to 8-1, 6-0 and 2-1 wins over Odessa College Saturday at Allan Saxe Field.
"All area of our game were solid, but I'm especially proud of our pitching and hitting," said Hedrick. "The team continues to grow and the next step is for them to find out just how good they can be. When they realize how good they are together, we will be tough to beat.
"Our freshmen continue to gain experience and I see improvement in our team every day. The fall schedule is a good way to break up practice and allow the team to face other competition."
Jones scattered four hits and struckout six in a six-inning 8-1 victory. Hulme allowed one hit in a five-inning 6-0 win and Fortenberry did not allow a hit in a 2-1, five-inning win.
Moore drove home three runs with her three hits and Hulme went 1-for-4 with three RBIs. Swofford was 3-for-7 with two RBIs.
UT-Arlington has outscored its opponents 28-5 to post six wins in the fall - three each over Tyler Junior College and Odessa College.
UT Arlington returns to action Saturday, Oct. 14 when they host McLennan Community College at noon at Allan Saxe Field.
