ARLINGTON, Texas - For the sixth time this season, the UT Arlington volleyball put together a complete match and completely the sweep as they handed Texas-San Antonio a 30-18, 30-22, 30-27 defeat Saturday afternoon at Texas Hall.
The victory improved the Mavs to 15-6 on the season and 4-1 in conference play. The game-one victory was just the first for the Mavs in their last five matches. UTSA dropped to 10-10 on the season and 3-3 in conference play.
The first game was tight early on as the teams were even at 10-10. UTA got a spark at that point and went on a 12-2 run to open up a double-digit advantage. Five ball-handling errors by the Runners fueled the run and the Mavs got kills from Ellen Murray, Torie Dacus and Liz Curry during the run. UTSA would get within seven, but Dacus would supply two kills and Ashley Smith would deliver an ace on game point.
The second game remained within three points until a Dani Johnson kill sparked a run to open a six-point advantage. UTSA would never recover from the run and Dacus would end the game just moments later.
UTA was never able to shake UTSA in the third game and the Mavs clung to a 21-19 lead on a Gina Kalb kill. A pair of UTSA errors and a pair of Dacus kills pushed the lead to five. With the Mavs at match point, UTSA took advantage of a Maverick hitting error and a Brittany Hildebrand kill to pull within two. Kalb put the game and the match away for UTA.
Dacus led the offense with 16 kills and was joined in double figures by Johnson with 10. Smith led the defense with 22 digs, while Curry added 11 and Johnson 10.
As a team, the Mavs recorded 53 kills on 129 swings with only 12 errors. Their .318 hitting percentage is the third highest this season.
UTA returns to the court on Oct. 13 as it plays host to East Division leading McNeese State. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Texas Hall.
