LAREDO, Texas - The UT-Arlington men's golf team fired an opening day score of three-under-par 573 to stand in fourth place after the opening day of the 55th annual Border Olympics at the Laredo Country Club Friday.
UTA shot rounds of three-under-par 285 and even-par 288 during the afternoon round to trail leader Baylor by 10 strokes. No official scores were released on Friday after a scorecard from New Mexico State was not turned into the tournament director.
The third and final round will be Saturday at the 7,241-yard par-72 Laredo Country Club course.
"Our goal coming into this tournament was to beat Houston and Lamar and we still have a chance to do that," said UTA Men's Golf Coach Jay Rees. "We played steady golf today and we will just have to come out and work hard (Saturday)."
Sophomore Zack Reeves (Arlington, Texas) led the Mavs with a 36-hole total of 141 after rounds of 70 and 71.
Junior Michael Douthit (Palestine, Texas) and Ryan Zamorano (Dallas, Texas) finished at 142. Douthit had back-to-back rounds of 71 and Zamorano carded a 70 and 72.
Mark Campbell (Southlake, Texas) had a 73 in the morning and scrambled for a 75 under windy conditions in the afternoon.
Senior Tyrone Mordt (Johannesburg, South Africa) finished the day with a 75 and 76 for a 151.
