BOISE, Idaho - The Texas-Arlington men's tennis team split two matches on Wednesday on the opening day of the Boise State Invitational.
Texas-Arlington (7-3) opened the day by defeating Portland, 4-1, in the opening round of the tournament. Diego Mattar, Daniel Omana, Alberto Agis and Javier Herrera all won singles matches.
In the second round match versus #23 Boise State, the Mavericks were up against a lot, as the Broncos had won 12 of their last 13 matches.
Senior Sandy Farquharson led the way, defeating Thomas Schoek, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, at the number one position. Senior Niels Buksik put the Mavs ahead 2-0, when he beat Steve Robertson, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, at the number six position. Texas-Arlington lost matches at the four and five positions. Omana took the first set of his match against Eric Roberson, before falling, 5-6, 6-4, 7-5, at the number three position. Mattar lost a three-set match as well, when he was bested by Clancy Shields, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, at the number two position.
The Mavericks will be back in action Friday when they take on College of Santa Fe in the Boise State Invitational. First-serve is set for 2:30 p.m. at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club.
