UT Arlington senior pitcher tossed a one-hit shutout to lift the Mavericks to a 2-0 victory over Louisiana Tech in game one of a doubleheader at Allan Saxe Field Wednesday afternoon.
Garro (10-6) baffled the Tech batters in game one with a variety of off-speed pitches. Emma Barnes singled through the left side of the infield to start the game for the only hit. Garro walked one batter and struck out six for her tenth win of the season.
Offensively, UTA broke the scoreless tie as Autumn Petrino doubled to left field to score Courtni Anderson from first base. Anderson knocked the ball loose from catcher Regan Clark at the plate for a 1-0 lead.
Deejay Nelson hit her third home run of the season, a line-drive shot over the left-field fence, for a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning.
Courtney Avery (2-5) took the loss for Louisiana Tech. Tech (7-18) lost for the ninth time in 11 games.
The Mavericks return to Southland Conference play Saturday at Sam Houston State. The first pitch is at 5 p.m.
