Louisiana Tech jumped out to early 3-0 and then held off the UT Arlington Mavericks 6-4 in college softball action Wednesday night at Allan Saxe Field.
UTA (17-11) out-hit the Lady Techsters 13 to 6, but left 10 runners on base for the night. Louisiana Tech (8-18) won for the third time in 12 games.
Louisiana Tech scored three runs in the top of the first inning off two hits and never trailed. After leadoff hitter Emma Barnes field out, Rochelle Sandberg and Christine Echols walked. Third baseman Sandy Carroll singled to score Sandberg. Regan Clark reached on a fielder's choice to score Echols and Ashley Cameron scored on single by Carly White.
UTA responded with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jenna Fortune singled to left to score Courtni Anderson from third and Katie Jones' double scored Autumn Petrino.
UTA tied the game in the third inning with Deejay Nelson's second home run of the day, a shot to center field to make it 3-3. Nelson homered in the first game of the day, a 2-0 win over Tech.
LTU took the lead for good when Andrea Gardner singled to third base to score White who reached base on an error by starting pitcher Elizabeth Fuentes (2-1).
Fuentes pitched four innings and allowed five runs on five hits and two walks. Sophomore Laura Jones came on in relief and allowed one run - a solo home run to Echols in the fifth inning for a 6-3 lead.
Second baseman Jenna Fortune led the offensive with four singles in four at-bats. Katie Jones went 3-for-4, including a double. Petrino and Courtni Anderson each had two hits.
UTA returns to Southland Conference play Saturday at Sam Houston State at 5 p.m.
