Box Score
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - UT-Arlington junior left hander Ryan Riddle threw 82 of his 116 pitches for strikes as he tossed the first complete-game shutout of the season for the Mavericks as they remained unbeaten in Southland Conference action with a 6-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin Friday afternoon at Jaycee Field.
Riddle (3-0) kept the Lumberjacks in check all day as he allowed just six hits and struck out a career-best seven, without walking a batter.
The Mavs (12-16, 8-0 SLC) got the offense rolling in the second inning as Danny Slinkman started things with a double over the head of the center fielder. After moving to third on a groundout, Kyle Thomason drove in a run with a single to right field. Thomason would then steal second and score when Brock Wilson's grounder went through the legs of the first baseman. Kyle Rudy would sacrifice Wilson into scoring position and Daniel Rieder would drive him in with a single to right field.
A promising start to the fifth inning ending badly for the Mavs as Rieder walked and was balked to second. On third with one out, Rieder tried to tag from third on a fly ball to center field, but was thrown out. To make things worse, Rieder was ejected for the game for not sliding and must sit out tomorrow afternoon's contest.
UTA double its lead in the seventh as Adam Moore ripped a one-out double just inside the bag at third and wound up at third after a Justin Stevens walk and Slinkman hit by pitch. Robby Winn drove in a pair of runs with a double over the head of the left fielder and Thomason drove in a run with a groundout to second.
Winn led the Mavs offense with two hits and two RBIs. Thomason added a pair of RBIs and Slinkman scored two runs.
SFA (6-24, 2-11 SLC) managed six hits in the contest, but only got two runners to third and three in scoring position all game. David Jeans and Zach Gardner led the Jacks with two hits apiece.
Richard Folmer (0-2) took the loss as he allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits in six innings of work. He walked four and struck out two.
The Mavs and Jacks will play the second game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Jaycee Field in Nacogdoches.
