Houston first baseman Angel Shamblin stroked a two-run single in the top of the 11th inning as Houston held off UTA 6-4 in the first game of a doubleheader at Allan Saxe Field Tuesday night.
UTA (9-7) could not take advantage of another solid pitching outing by senior lefthander Jill Garro (5-4). Garro, anmed the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week earlier in the day, scattered eight hits, allowing two earned runs in the complete-game.
UTA committed two errors in the game. One allowed the tying run to score when a Jenna Fortune miscue allowed Jessica Valis to score from second base to tie the game at 1-1.
Houston broke the game open in the 11th inning with three runs on two hits. A Christa Raley single moved pinch runner Jamie Adams to third base. After Raley stole second, Shamblin hit the single to break the 3-3 tie. Houston added an insurance run when Texas A&M transfer Laura Durham hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Shamblin for the 6-3 lead.
UTA tried to mount a comeback when Dee Jay Nelson singled up the middle to score Autumn Petrino from second to cut the lead to 6-4. Courtni Anderson doubled to center field, but pinch runner Brittany Stevens was gunned down at the plate on a 8-4-2 relay for two outs.
Shamblin went 3-for-5 with three RBI to lead Houston. UTA was led by catcher Courtni Anderson's 3-for-5 and two RBI outing.
UTA returns to action Saturday when the travel to Nicholls State for a three-game Southland Conference series beginning Saturday at 1 p.m.
