AUSTIN, Texas - UT-Arlington freshman left hander Kyle Gainley was on top of his game on Tuesday evening as he limited #6 Texas to one earned run on six hits over seven-plus innings in helping the Mavs to a 6-3 upset victory over the Longhorns in front of 4,717 fans at Disch-Falk Field.
The victory was the Mavs 20th victory over a team ranked in the nation's top 10 at the time of the contest and the eighth time the Longhorns have been the victim.
Gainley (1-4) had the longest outing of his career and tied his career-best with four strikeouts. He retired the first two hitters in each of the first five innings before allowing the third runner to reach. He set the Horns down in order in the sixth.
Nathan Long came out of the bullpen in the seventh with two on and nobody out and did not allow a run to score. He would go on to allow two hits and strike out three in 2.1 innings of work.
Chris Taylor pitched the final two-thirds of an inning to secure the victory.
The Mavs (15-20) offense erupted in the second inning as they collected four hits and took advantage of two Longhorn errors to push five runs across. Kyle Rudy started things with a one-out double into the gap in left center. Rudy took third on a wild pitch and Brock Wilson walked. With two outs, Daniel Rieder delivered an RBI single down the right field line. James Smith followed with a grounder to third that was thrown away by Nick Peoples allowing one run to score. Adam Moore followed with a line drive that hit the top of the left field wall for a two-RBI double. Justin Stevens drove in the final run with a single to center field.
UT (24-12) got a run back in the home-half of the second as Bradley Suttle hit a two-out single to left field and scored on Jordan Danks' double off the center field wall.
The Horns put another two-out rally together in the third as Drew Stubbs and Carson Kainer had back-to-back singles through the left side. UT went with the double steal and the throw to third got passed the third baseman, allowing Stubbs to score.
UTA got a run back in the fourth as Smith reached on a fielder's choice and Moore walked. With two outs, Danny Slinkman singled off the glove off the first baseman to score Smith from second.
The Horns got another run in the ninth as Stubbs plated a run with a double to right center.
Joey Parigi (1-1) took the loss as he allowed five runs, one earned, on five hits in 1.2 innings. Overall, UT threw six pitchers in the game, all left handers.
Moore led the Mavs offense as he went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a pair of walks. Rieder and Stevens each added a pair of hits as UTA collected 11 in the contest. Stubbs had four hits for UT.
The Mavs return to action on Friday, April 14, when they open a three-game Southland Conference series at McNeese State. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at the Cowboy Diamond.
