ARLINGTON, Texas - TCU pushed across five runs in the top of the eighth inning and four more in the ninth to break open a close game and eliminate any chance of a UT-Arlington comeback in handing the Mavs a 16-6 defeat Tuesday evening at Clay Gould Ballpark.
With one out, Chad Huffman hit his second solo home run of the contest to left field. After a flyout to center, Andrew Walker singled to center and scored on Austin Adam's double to left field. Jerid Buttell later delivered a pinch-hit RBI single and Ryan Pack pounded a two-run double off the left field wall.
The Horned Frogs (25-17) got on the board in the first inning as Huffman hit a solo shot to straight away center field for his sixth home run of the season.
UTA (19-25) responded in the home-half of the inning as James Smith singled through the left side and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Adam Moore ripped a hanging off speed pitch down the left field line for a ground-rule RBI double.
The Mavs got on the board again in the third inning as Smith and Daniel Rieder drew back-to-back one-out walks. After a wild pitch, Moore drove in both runners with a single back through the box. Ben Burum followed with a single just off the glove of a leaping first baseman and Robby Winn followed with an RBI single that fell into no-man's land down the left field line.
TCU took advantage of a fielding error in the fourth inning to plate four runs. After a walk and a single, Corey Steglich drove in a run with a single through the left side ending the day of UTA starter Erik Cartmill. After Pack reached on a fielding error to load the bases before Bryan Kervin plated a run with a sacrifice fly to center. Steven Trout gave the Frogs the lead with a two-run single to right center.
The Frogs added to their lead in the fifth as a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs. Matt Vern drove in a run as he was hit by a pitch and Steglich reached on an RBI fielder's choice.
A harmless start to the fifth inning turned into a rally for the Mavs as Burum doubled to gap in left center and Winn walked with two outs. Brock Wilson drove in both runners as he sliced a double just inside the left field foul line.
Ryan Martin (1-2) took the loss as he gave up three runs, two earned, on three hits in two-thirds of an inning. Shawn Ferguson (3-3) earned the victory as he allowed one run on four hits in 1.2 innings.
Smith, Moore and Burum each collected three hits as the Mavs pounded out 16 in the contest. Moore drove in three runs for the second straight game. Huffman and Walker each collected three hits for TCU.
The Mavs return to action on April 28-30 as they travel to take on Southeastern Louisiana in a crucial Southland Conference series. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Alumni Field.
