ARLINGTON, Texas - The Lamar offense belted four home runs and starting pitcher William Delage held the Mavericks scoreless through eight innings as the Cardinals took their second straight game over UT-Arlington, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Delage (7-2) limited the Mavs just six hits and retired 10 straight during the middle innings. He struck out nine in 8.1 innings.
The Mavs (14-19, 10-2 SLC) had their best chance to score in the second inning as with two outs, Kyle Rudy walked, Brock Wilson singled through the right side and Jerry Fisher was hit by a pitch. Daniel Rieder couldn't drive in the run as he flew out to center field.
The Cardinals (24-11, 12-2 SLC) got on the board in the fourth inning as C.J. Ebarb delivered a solo home run to straight away center for his sixth homer of the season.
LU added another run in the sixth as Dan Hernandez doubled to left center and came around to score on Ebarb's double over the head of the left fielder.
Back-to-back home runs to start the eighth inning from Collin DeLome and Dan Hernandez put the game away for the Cardinals in the eighth.
The Cardinals added three more runs in the ninth as Colt Crawford and Erik Kanaby hit back-to-back doubles and DeLome delivered a two-run home run to right center, his second in as many at-bats.
UTA put runners on second and third with one out in the ninth, but failed to get a run on the board as the next hitter lined out to third and the game ended with a harmless fly ball to left field.
Dillon Gee (4-5) took the loss as he allowed four runs on 10 hits, three solo home runs, in seven-plus innings. He struck out six and walked one.
"Dillon came out and I thought he pitched a pretty good game for six innings and then got a little tired their in the seventh," said head coach Jeff Curtis. "He kept us in the game and that is exactly what we needed him to do. We just couldn't get it going offensively and the guy they threw against us (Delage) did a good job throwing strikes and keeping us off balance. We had a chance early to get a run with two outs, but unfortunately it slipped us by and we will just come out tomorrow and try to take the final game."
Moore and Smith led the offense with two hits apiece. Kanaby and Hernandez had three hits each for the Cardinals.
The Mavs and Cardinals will play the final game of the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
