FORT WORTH, Texas - The 2006 UT-Arlington baseball season can be summed up in five batters in the sixth inning as a ground ball with two outs was booted, allowing the first of six unearned runs to score as TCU rallied for an 8-5 victory Tuesday afternoon at Lupton Stadium.
The Frogs got two runners on with nobody out in the sixth when the Mavs went to the bullpen and got Erik Cartmill. Cartmill got a flyout and a strikeout before inducing a grounder to second that was booted, allowing one run to score.
The Mavs went to their bullpen again and got Brandon Endsley who got ahead 0-2 before giving up a three-run blast to left center off the bat of Ryan Pack. That was just the beginning of the end for Endsley who then gave up a single, RBI double to Corey Steglich and an RBI single to Huffman.
TCU (32-21) got on the board in the first as Chad Huffman was hit by a pitch with two outs. He reached third as his stolen base attempt was dropped by the shortstop, allowing him to go to third. Austin Adams made the Mavs pay with an RBI single through the left side.
UTA (23-32) got its offense rolling in the second as Ben Burum walked and Robby Winn extended his hit-streak to 18 games with a single up the middle. After a sac bunt, Brock Wilson walked to load the bases. Kyle Rudy drove in a run with a groundout to short before a wild pitch scored the second run. Collin Garner followed with an RBI bunt base hit to third and stole second. Daniel Rieder drove in Garner with a single up the middle.
The Frogs got a run back in the third as Corey Steglich walked on four pitches and Huffman doubled into the gap in right center. Adams drove in a run with a groundout to short.
UTA pushed another run across in the sixth as Winn singled through the left side and was sacrificed to second by Danny Slinkman. Wilson drove in the runner with a single back through the box.
Brandon Endsley (0-3) took the loss after giving up three runs on four hits in one-third of an inning. Chase Perry (1-1) was the fortunate victor after allowing one run on two hits in two innings. Brad Furnish (3) picked up the save after allowing one hit and striking out one in one inning.
The Mavs return to action on May 18 as they travel to take on Dallas Baptist. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Patriot Field.
