BEARS CLAW MAVS INTO SUBMISSION

May 2, 2006

Box Score

WACO, Texas - For the second time in as many trips to Baylor Ballpark in 2006, the UT-Arlington pitching staff was no match for the Baylor offense as the Bears pounded out 14 hits in a 14-5 victory Tuesday evening. The Bears outscored the Mavs 31-9 in two games in Waco and 40-13 in the three games this season.

The Bears (28-19) got the offense rolling immediately as after a hit and a walk, Kevin Sevigny hit a three-run shot to left center. The Mavs finally got an out before another walk and base hit set up Tim Jackson's two-run double into the corner in left field.

BU added to its lead in the third inning as Mike Pankratz singled up the middle and Ben Booker put a bunt base hit down the third base line that was thrown away to put runners on second and third with no outs. Jackson drove in a run with a groundout and Kevin Russo drove in another with a sacrifice fly to left field.

UTA (20-28) got on the board in the fourth inning as Adam Moore hit his seventh home run of the season over the right center field wall for a solo shot. It was the first home run hit by UTA at Baylor Ballpark since Daniel Ortmeier on April 30, 2002.

The Bears quickly responded with four runs of their own in the home-half of the inning as Seth Fortenberry hit an RBI triple down the right-field line and Pankratz followed with a two-run homer over the monster in straight away center field. Russo drove in the fourth run of the inning with his second sacrifice fly of the game.

The Mavs scratched across an unearned run in the fifth as Kyle Rudy ledoff the inning with a single to left center. With two outs, Daniel Rieder beat out a single to first base and the runner scored when the ball was thrown into the Mavs dugout.

BU pushed the lead back to double figures as after a runner reached on a throwing error, Fortenberry drove in a run with a single through the right side and Booker delivered a sacrifice fly to center field.

The lead continued to grow in the sixth as following a hit-by-pitch, Beamer Weems doubled down the right-field line to drive in a run.

The Mavs got a run back in the seventh as Collin Garner beat out an infield single and went to second on the throwing error. Jerry Fisher drove in the runner with a double just inside the bag at third.

UTA closed out the scoring in the ninth as Rudy doubled to left field and Garner beat out an infield single. After a walk to Thad Ledford to load the bases, Matthew Otteman drove in a run with a single to center. With two outs, Ben Burum delivered an RBI single through the left side.

Austin Bridges (3-4) took the loss as he gave up five runs on four hits in one inning of work. He also walked two and hit a batter. Randall Linebaugh (5-0) earned the victory as he allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits with a career-high seven strikeouts.

The Mavs return to the diamond on May 5-7 as they open up a home Southland Conference series against Sam Houston State. The series will get underway on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
