ARLINGTON, Texas - Junior Quinchun Carey had a busy day on Saturday as he led the Texas-Arlington track team at the 2006 UTA Open at Maverick Stadium.
Carey, a Fort Worth, Texas native, took home first place honors in the long jump with a mark of 7.44 meters. He also finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 14.65 meters. However, his work was not complete as he teamed up with junior Coby Morrison, junior Jarred Connaughton and freshman Byron Majors to win the 4x100 relay with a time of 40.45 seconds.
Also on the men's side, senior Shay Collett won the pole vault, with a mark of 5.05 meters, and Connaughton finished second in the 100 meters with a time of 10.31 seconds.
On the women's side, sophomore Angela Gonzales and senior Tara Burns finished in the top two spots in the long jump. They posted distances of 5.97 meters and 5.95 meters, respectively. Gonzalez' distance qualified her for the NCAA Regionals.
In the triple jump, freshman Kymbra Lovan took home first place honors with a leap of 11.82 meters.
In the 200 meters, it was a clean sweep for the Mavericks, as senior Ellen Garrison, sophomore Chelsea Huddleston and junior Kourtnee Jones finished 1,2,3. Garrison won the event with a time of 24.16 seconds, while Huddleston (24.52 seconds) and Jones (24.54 seconds) finished close behind. The trio teamed up with sophomore Kimberly Hargers to place second in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 45.83 seconds. Oklahoma's relay team won first with a time of 45.13 seconds.
Junior Vanessa Maida and senior Lacey Moore both finished first in the pole vault with Moore winning Friday's competition and Maida winning on Saturday. Maida's best mark was 3.75 meters, while Moore's was 3.60 meters.
Junior Linda Rosema finished first in the hammer throw with a toss of 46.88 meters.
The Mavericks will be back in action May13-15, when they host the Southland Conference Championships at Maverick Stadium.
