ARLINGTON, Texas - Former UT-Arlington standout outfielder Daniel Ortmeier is up for his second stint in the Major Leagues as the San Francisco Giants recalled him from Triple-A Fresno on May 8. Ortmeier was a September call-up for the Giants in 2005.
Ortmeier has been playing the 2006 season for the Fresno Grizzlies of the Pacific Coast League where he was hitting .294 with three home runs and 23 RBIs in 30 games. He also recorded eight doubles, one triple and three stolen bases.
Ortmeier made his Major League debut on Sept. 5, 2005 as a pinch-hitter against the Los Angeles Dodgers on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball and promptly delivered an infield single off Dodgers reliever Steve Schmoll. He made the most of his first career RBI as he drove in what turned out to be the game-winning run with a single in the sixth inning against the Chicago Cubs. Ortmeier finished the season by going 3-for-22 (.136) with one RBI in 15 games. He started four games in right field.
Ortmeier spent the 2005 season playing for the Double-A Norwich Navigators of the Eastern League. He earned mid-season and post-season honors from the Eastern League after hitting .274 with 85 runs scored, 23 doubles, six triples, 20 home runs, 79 RBIs and 35 stolen bases. He became the first Gators player and only the third in Eastern League history to post 20/20 numbers in home runs and stolen bases.
While at UTA, Ortmeier was a two-time first team all-Southland Conference outfielder and was tabbed as the second-best pro prospect in the conference. He hit .339 with a team-best 14 home runs and 66 RBIs in 2002. He was selected in the third round of 2002 Draft by the Giants.
Prior to his time at UTA, Ortmeier earned honorable mention All-America accolades by USA Today after hitting .474 with seven home runs and 41 RBIs as a senior at Lewisville High School. He was drafted in the 27th round by the Chicago White Sox in 1999, but did not sign.
