OOLTEWAH, Tenn. - The UT Arlington men's golf team fired back-to-back rounds of 15-over-par 303 which was good enough to tie for fifth place after the opening day of the Scenic City Invitational here Monday.
Darkness left six teams on the course - Mississippi, Mississippi State, Southeastern Louisiana, Virginia, Charlotte and Tennessee-Chattanooga - with their second round scores pending until the completion of the round. Charlotte and Middle Tennessee State were tied at 15-over-par. MTSU finished their afternoon round with a 306 after carding a three-under-par 285 in the morning.
Mississippi State is 17-over-par followed by Mississippi at 22-over before Ut Arlington, Memphis and Alabama-Birmingham sit in a three-way logjam at 30-over-par 606.
UT Arlington, who stood tied for 13th after nine holes, grinded out the day on the prestigious Honors Course (par-72, 7,215 yards), regarded as one of the top 100 golf courses in the country by Golfweek.com. Junior Zack Reeves posted one of 10 under-par rounds on the day with a two-under 70 in the morning. But the Honors course showed her teeth in the afternoon as Reeves struggle to six-over-par through the first seven holes before double bogeys on Nos. 16 and 18 gave the all-Southland Conference first-team member an 81, the second-highest score he has posted in his collegiate career.
Callum Macaulay of Mississippi is he tournament leader after a 69 and 71 (140) on opening day.
Senior Ryan Zamorano (77-75-152) played steady for the day. Three birdies on the front nine holes in the afternoon offset three bogeys and a double-bogey en route to a 75.
A trio of freshmen - Bryce Easton, Michael van de Venter and Kevin Varrichio - kept the Mavs' on the top half of the leaderboard as they got a dose of Division I collegiate golf.
Easton overcame a quadruple bogey eight on the par-4, fifth hole on the opening round to post a seven-over-par 79 in his collegiate debut. In the afternoon, Easton eagled the 490-yard, par-5 to finish two-over 74 and 153 for the day.
