ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington and Tulsa volleyball teams put on a show for the fans in attendance at Texas Hall as the two teams split the first four games by identical scores and found themselves tied 15-15 in the deciding game before the Golden Hurricane scored the final two points to take the match 25-30, 30-28, 25-30, 30-28, 15-17.
The Golden Hurricane (8-2) got the early advantage in the final game as they opened up an 8-5 advantage. UTA would get kills from Dani Johnson and Teena Sobczak and a hitting error from UT to tie the score.
Once again, the Mavs fell behind by three points before Emily Nedderman served four straight points to give UTA its first match point at 14-12. UT fought off both match points and then went down 15-14 before Germana Hilario put away a kill.
Kassiana Urnau grabbed the lead for good with a service ace and Hilario and Ivana Krejcirova blocked the final point of the match.
Urnau was the story of the match for the Golden Hurricanes as she had 26 kills and 31 digs. Kelsey Wood led UT with a game-high 37 digs.
The Mavs (6-3) would not be denied on the offensive end as Ashley Smith had a season-high 35 digs to lead five players in double figures in digs. Johnson recorded 29 digs, Sobczak 27, Torie Dacus 24 and Nedderman 11 as the Mavs recorded 134 digs in the match.
Dacus was also strong on the offensive end as she posted a career-best 18 kills. She was joined in double figures by Sobczak with 15 and Johnson 11.
Gina Kalb led the charge at the net with nine block assists to go along with one solo block. Nedderman added seven block assists and Ellen Murray and Sobczak each added five.
The Mavs return to action tomorrow as they take on Duquesne at 12 p.m. and Washington State at 7 p.m. on the second day of the 2006 Hilton Arlington/UTA Invitational.
