Box Score
ARLINGTON, Texas - David McLeod came off the bench in the ninth inning with the bases loaded and two outs and took a 3-2 pitch low and outside to score the game-winning run as UT Arlington scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat New Mexico 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark. The victory improves the Mavs to 3-4 on the season.
Pinch hitter Daniel Rieder started the inning with an opposite field single to left field. After a David Newby sacrifice bunt advanced the runner, Leo Radkowski singled through the left side to put runners on the corners. Matthew Otteman tied the game with a bunt base hit down the first base line.
A groundout advanced both runners and Mitch Putman was intentionally walked to set up the game-winning situation for McLeod.
UNM starter Jacob Norton (0-2) had the Mavericks handcuffed through the first eight innings by allowing only five hits before a pair of runs on three hits and two walks sent him and the Lobos to defeat.
Norton wasn't the only starting pitcher on top his game on Sunday as Mavs starter Chris Taylor allowed just one run on eight hits over eight innings of work. Brandon Endsley (1-0) picked up the victory as he retired all three batters he faced in the ninth.
The Lobos (3-5) pushed their only run across in the fifth as Derek Pilkington reached on a bunt base hit. After a sacrifice bunt and single to left center from Bret Fanning, Jay Russell drove in the runner with a groundout to second base.
The Mavs return to the diamond on Feb. 20 as they travel to take on Texas A&M. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Olsen Field in College Station.
