The UT Arlington Mavericks recorded the second lowest round of the final round with an even-par 288 to grab fifth place at the 2007 UCF-Rio Pinar Intercollegiate here Tuesday afternoon.
UTA finished the tournament with a 54-hole total of 879, 17 strokes behind champion Tennessee-Chattanooga. The finish is the highest of the season for the Mavs, ranked 127th nationally going into the tournament.
Tulsa (863) finished second followed by Mississippi (872), Louisville (876), UT Arlington (879), Southern Mississippi (880), South Alabama (881), Wichita State (882), Ohio State (883) and South Florida (886). Mississippi State and UNC-Wilmington tied for 11th with an 887. Furman (894), Missouri (895), Memphis (906), Mercer (906), Georgia Southern (909) and Kansas State (917) round out the 18-team standings.
Senior Bryan Baker had his second lowest tournament round of his career with a two-under-70 Tuesday to lead the Mavs. He finished the tournament tied for 33rd with a 54-hole total of six-over-par 222.
Junior Zack Reeves notched his fourth top-20 finish of the season and the 17th of his career with a 220 after a final round of even-par 72.
Freshman Michael van de Venter had his best tournament of his career, tying for 25th place with a 221. He scored a 221 over 54 holes on the 6,978-yard, par-72, Rio Pinar Country Club Course.
Baker and freshman Bobby Massa tied for 44th with the 222. Massa had rounds of 75, 74 and 73 over the two-day event while Baker had back-to-back 76s on Monday and the 70 on Tuesday.
Freshman Bryce Easton ballooned with a 78 Tuesday after rounds of 72 and 74 on Monday.
The Mavs will return to place March 5-6 at the Callaway Golf Invitational at The Farms Golf Course in Ranch Santa Fe, Calif., near San Diego.
