HOUSTON, Texas - The UT Arlington junior Angela Gonzales jumped a personal-best mark of 5.59 meters (18-04.25) to claim second place during the opening day of the Houston Invitational at the Bill Yeman Fieldhouse at the University of Houston Friday.

Saturday will see the conclusion of the heptathlon, field events and running events. The final day of the meet begins at 10 a.m. and the last race is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

gonzales, ranked third in the Southland Conference in the long jump, took second place in the long jump "b" competition late Friday.

The Mavericks had three pole vaulters score in the top eight. Lacey Moore tied for sixth with a vaulter of 11-05.75. Erin Cluiss and Vanessa Maida tied for eighth with a height of 10-11.75 (3.35m).

Both men's and women's distance medley relay took third place. The women's team clipped more than 30-seconds off their season-best time with a 12:10.90. The men's team finished with a time of 10:11.64 (14-seconds better than their best at Texas Tech on Jan. 19).

Andrew Duncan took fourth in the long jump "B" divn with a leap of 6.28 meters (20-07.25).

The meet is the final preparation before the Southland Conference Indoor Championships, Feb. 16-17, at the University of Houston facility.
