ROUND ROCK, Texas - The inclement weather that has limited the outdoor practice for the UT Arlington baseball team came back to haunt the Mavericks in their season opener as they committed four early errors that led to four unearned Texas runs as the #7 Longhorns came away with a 9-4 victory Tuesday at The Dell Diamond.
The Longhorns (2-2) took advantage of a pair of Maverick throwing errors in the first inning to push across a pair of runs, but it was the diving catch down the right-field line by Brock Wilson that limited the damage. Nick People started things be reaching on a throwing error before stealing second and going to third as the throw sailed into center field. Jordan Danks tucked a ball inside the left-field line for an RBI double and Bradley Suttle blooped a single to left center for the second run.
The Mavs (0-1) got a run back in the fourth inning as Mitch Putman hammered a 3-2 pitch over the hill in left-center field, well beyond the outfield wall.
UT took advantage of more UTA fielding errors to push across three runs in the home-half of the fourth. After Pat McCrory was hit by a pitch, he reached second as the ball was dropped by the shortstop on the stolen base attempt. A single up the middle by Kyle Russell scored the run before a sacrifice bunt scored Russell. The final run scored when Preston Clark's high fly ball into shallow left center fell harmlessly to the ground.
UTA used another long ball in the fifth inning to climb back into the contest. With one out, Wilson doubled off the wall in left field and David Newby reached on an error. Daniel Rieder followed with a tomahawk three-run shot over the Mavs bullpen in right center.
The Horns answered back in the home-half of the inning as Russell drove in another unearned run with a double to center field in which the center fielder fell down just before making the catch.
UT added another run in the sixth as a walk and a hit batter set the Horns up for a successful double steal.
Russell added to the lead in the seventh with a solo home run to right center.
Leo Radkowski and Wilson led the Mavs nine-hit attack with a pair of hits each and Rieder drove in three runs. Russell led the Horns by going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored.
Dillon Gee (0-1) took the loss after giving up three runs, two earned, on three hits with three strikeouts in three innings of work. Joseph Krebs (1-0) picked up the victory as he tossed 2.2 shutout innings of relief with four strikeouts.
The Mavs return to the diamond on Friday, Feb. 9 as they host Louisiana Tech in the 2007 home opener. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
