Box Score
ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington starting pitcher Dillon Gee tossed his second straight complete game, allowing three earned runs and struck out six, but the Mavericks offense only managed one run as UTA dropped in second straight conference contest, 4-1, to Lamar Saturday afternoon.
LU starter Allen Harrington (3-2) was just a little better than Gee as he allowed one run on seven hits with eight strikeouts in his first complete game of the season.
The Cardinals (14-8, 2-0) got on the board in the second inning as they took advantage of a Mavericks fielding error to score an unearned run. With two outs and a runner on first, Wes Desmond reached on the error and Travis Duncan plated the runner with a single through the right side.
UTA (9-13, 0-2) tied the game in the fifth inning as David Newby delivered a bad-hop double past the first baseman and came around to score on Kyle Rudy's single up the middle.
LU answered right back in the fifth as Collin DeLome delivered an RBI triple off the base of the wall in right center and Michael Ambort followed with an RBI single through the left side.
The Cardinals added an insurance run in the seventh they put two runners in scoring position before Ryan Baker delivered a sacrifice fly to center field.
UTA had a chance in the eighth inning as Rudy drew a one-out walk and Leo Radkowski followed with a single up the middle. Brock Wilson followed by dropping a ball in front of the right fielder, but it turned into an easy fielder's choice at third. Daniel Rieder would load the bases with his third hit of the game before Mitch Putman ended the inning with a lazy popup to second.
Rieder led the offense with three hits and Rudy added two.
The Mavs and Cardinals close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
