ARLINGTON, Texas - The postseason hopes for UT Arlington all but came to an end on Saturday when Brad Becker delivered a two-out, two-run single in the top of the ninth inning to give McNeese State the 3-1 victory and completed the doubleheader sweep over the Mavericks.
David Leatherwood started the rally with a one-out walk. Joe Hulett would follow with a single to center. After a strikeout, both runners executed the double steal which took the bat out of Bryan Cartie's (3-for-3) hands with the intentional walk. That set up the heroics for Becker who delivered the 0-1 pitch into center field for the victory.
The Cowboys (13-23, 9-4 SLC) pushed a run across in the third inning as Shon Landry chopped a double over the head of the third baseman and scored on Charlie Kingrey's two-out single up the middle.
UTA (10-26, 1-13 SLC) tied the game in the sixth as Brock Wilson doubled to left field and went to third on Daniel Rieder's single to right field. Danny Slinkman drove in the runner with a fielder's choice to second.
Chris Taylor (2-3) took the loss after giving up two runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning before being ejected for throwing at a hitter. Danny Davis (1-1) picked up the victory after allowing one hit and striking out two in 2.1 innings.
Dillon Gee turned in another strong outing for the Mavs as he only surrendered one run, despite allowing 11 hits over eight innings.
The Mavs and Cowboys close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
