LIONS COMPLETE SWEEP OF MAVS

April 22, 2007

Box Score

HAMMOND, Louisiana - Matthew Schexnayder's pinch-hit RBI chopper over the third baseman's head in the bottom of the 10th inning helped Southeastern Louisiana complete the three-game sweep over UT Arlington, 6-5, Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The inning started with a one-out walk and a wild pitch. After an intentional walk and a flyout, Schexnayder hit the first pitch of the at-bat for the game winner.

The Lions (26-16, 9-9 SLC) gained the early lead in the first inning as Ty Summerlin doubled over the head of the left fielder and Chase Burch double drove him in with a bloop double in front of a sliding right fielder near the right-field line.

The Mavs (11-29, 2-16 SLC) answered right back as John Mark Cleaveland reached on a fielder's choice and scored when Burum delivered his seventh home run of the season to left field. It was the fifth straight conference series in which Burum has homered.

SLU regained the lead in the second as a pair of base hits set up Scott Viator's RBI double to right center to tie the game before a passed ball scored the second run of the inning.

The Lions added a run in the fifth as Burch reached on a fielder's choice and stole second before scoring on Dillon Sudduth's two-out single up the middle.

The Mavs got a run back in the sixth as Mitch Putman chopped a ball off the plate for a base hit and went to second on Daniel Rieder's groundout to the right side. With two outs, Burum delivered an RBI single up the middle.

SLU added an insurance run when Richard Imhoff delivered a solo home run to left field.

UTA tied the game in the eighth as Danny Slinkman singled up the middle and Putman reached on a fielding error. After a wild pitch, Rieder drove in a run with a groundout and Cleaveland tied the game with a single to left field.

Dillon Gee did not figure into the decision, but turned in another solid outing as he gave up five runs, four earned, on 12 hits and struck out nine over seven innings.

Brent Varnado (6-0) picked up the victory after allowing one hit and striking out one in two innings. PJ Burns (1-2) suffered the loss after allowing one run on two hits in 2.2 innings.

Burum led the offense by going 3-for-3 with a walk and three RBIs.

The Mavs return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 24, as they welcome Oklahoma to Clay Gould Ballpark. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
