GEE TOSSES COMPLETE-GAME SHUTOUT

April 27, 2007

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington right hander Dillon Gee dances around a leadoff triple and needed only 92 pitches to toss a complete-game three-hit shutout over Northwestern State on Friday evening as the Mavs took the series opener 7-0. It was the sixth straight victory over the Demons.

Gee (4-6) got out of the first inning with a lineout to second, a comebacker to the mound and a groundout to second. From that point on, Gee was nearly unhittable as he would only allow two ground balls through the infield, while striking out 10 and not walking a batter. It was the second double-digit strikeout game this season and the third of his career. In his last four starts, Gee has fanned 34 batters in 31 innings.

The Mavs (12-29, 3-16 SLC) got the offense in gear in the first inning as Daniel Rieder walked and went to third on Danny Slinkman's double to right field. A wild pitch would score the first run of the inning before Ben Burum would deliver and RBI single through the right side.

The offense woke back up with two outs in the third inning as Burum singled up the middle and Kyle Rudy singled to left field. David Masters drove in Burum with a single through the left side.

UTA kept the momentum in the fourth as David Newby reached after being hit by a pitch and scored on Slinkman's triple to right field.

The scoring continued in the sixth as Leo Radkowski and Newby singled before Slinkman delivered an RBI single to right field. Mitch Putman would follow with a two-run double into the alley in left center.

After getting a runner in scoring position in the first, the Demons (19-23, 9-9 SLC) managed only three other baserunners, none of which got passed first base.

Jimmy Heard (5-5) took the loss after allowing six runs on 11 hits in 5.1 innings.

Slinkman paced the Mavs offense by going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and fell just a home run shy of the cycle. Newby, Burum, Rudy, Masters and Radkowski each collected two hits.

The Mavs and Demons will play the second game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
