DEMONS EVEN SERIES WITH MAVS

ARLINGTON, Texas - Northwestern State used a five-run fifth inning to break open a close game and put and end to a six-game losing streak to UT Arlington as the Demons evened the series with a 14-4 victory over the Mavs Saturday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.

The Demons (20-23, 10-9 SLC) got on the board in the first inning as Clay Baker singled up the middle and scored on Brandon Richey's home run to left center.

UTA (12-30, 3-17 SLC) got a run back in the home-half of the inning as David Newby singled to left and stole second before scoring on Danny Slinkman's single up the middle.

NSU came right back in the third inning with two more runs Casey DeRosa delivered a two-run two-out double into the alley in right center.

The game really opened up in the fifth as the Demons sent nine men to the plate and pushed across five runs. Anthony Jones started the scoring with a two-run single through the left side and was followed by a DeRosa RBI single, a run on a wild pitch and a Justin O'Neal RBI single.

The Mavs got a run back in the bottom of the inning as they loaded the bases, but only managed a Kyle Rudy RBI single to left field.

UTA got one more run in the seventh as Mitch Putman hit a two-out solo home run to left center, his sixth of the season.

UTA's final run of the game came in the eighth as Rudy doubled to left center and later scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Leo Radkowski.

The Demons were back at it in the ninth as they pushed five more runs across on a two-run homer from DeRosa and pinch-hit two-run shot off the bat of Patrick Johnson.

Eamonn Donovan (0-2) suffered his second-straight defeat after allowing four runs on five hits over three innings. Heath Hennigan (4-1) took the victory after allowing just two runs on six hits and five strikeouts in five innings. Jason Grace (2) picked up the save after giving up two runs on three hits over four innings.

Brock Wilson led the offense by going 3-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases. Newby and Rudy each added two hits.

The Mavs and Demons will play the rubber game of the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
