MAVS DROP ANOTHER LOPSIDED AFFAIR

May 11, 2007

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Texas - Stephen F. Austin scored 10 runs over the final two innings to break open a close game and hand UT Arlington a 12-1 defeat Friday evening at Clay Gould Ballpark.

SFA (27-23, 14-11 SLC) got on the board in the third inning as Kevin Croft started a two-out rally with a solo home run to left center, his 10th of the season. Zach Gardner followed with a double just inside the bag at third and scored on Justin Long's single through the right side.

The Mavs (12-35, 3-22 SLC) threatened to get on the board in the sixth inning as Kyle Rudy started the inning with a single to center field and Daniel Rieder followed with a base on balls. After a sacrifice bunt from Danny Slinkman, SFA reliever Richard Folmer ended the hopes with strikeouts of Mitch Putman and Ben Burum.

The Jacks broke the game open in the seventh as they got RBI singles from Croft, Long and Steven Hill before Chris Smith delivered a three-run home run to left center.

The SFA bats were back at it in the eighth as Gardner's RBI single was followed by a two-run double from Hill and an RBI single from Smith.

UTA finally got on the board in the bottom of the eighth as Rieder walked and went to third on Putman's double into the alley. Burum followed with a sacrifice fly to left center to score the lone run and put an end to a scoreless streak that spanned 19 innings.

Dillon Gee (4-8) took the loss after giving up eight runs on 11 hits over seven innings. He struck out four and did not walk batter. He has now gone 26 innings without walking a batter. Jared Schrom (4-3) picked up the victory after allowing four hits and striking out two over five innings.

Rudy led the offense by going 3-for-4 and David Masters was 2-for-3. Putman collected a double in the eighth as the Mavs only other hit.

The Mavs and Jacks will play the second game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
