OFFENSE PROPELS MAVS TO 8-4 VICTORY OVER JACKS

May 12, 2007

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington used a six-run fourth inning and a solid start from right hander Nathan Long to defeat Stephen F. Austin 8-4 Saturday afternoon and even the series at one game apiece.

SFA (27-24, 14-12 SLC) got on the board in the first as Justin Long drew a one-out walk and scored when Steven Hill delivered a mammoth home run to left field.

The UTA (13-35, 4-22 SLC) offense found a groove in the fourth inning as David Newby started the inning with a walk and went to third on Ben Burum's single to right center. Matthew Otteman drove in Newby with a single through the left side and a passed ball put two runners in scoring position.

Collin Garner drove in the second run of the inning when his chopper tipped off the glove of the pitcher. Garner then stole second and Otteman scored from third as the ball sailed into center field. Leo Radkowski would drive in Garner with a single to center before stealing second and scoring on Kyle Rudy's single to center. Mitch Putman capped off the inning with a single to right field, scoring Rudy.

The Mavs added to the lead in the sixth as Garner drew a leadoff walk and scored on Radkowski's triple to right field. Rudy drove in the second run of the inning with a hard shot passed a drawn-in third baseman.

Long (2-7) picked up the victory after giving up three runs, two earned, on six hits over six-plus innings. Lance Luetge (7-4) took the loss after giving up five runs on eight hits over 3.1 innings. Ryan Martin (1) earned the save after allowing just one unearned run and striking out two over three innings.

Radkowski led the offense with three hits and pair of RBIs, while Rudy, Putman and Garner each added two hits.

The Mavs and Jacks close out the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark. All mother's and daughter's receive free admission as part of a Mother's Day promotion.
