MIDDLE BLOCKERS LEAD MAVS TO SWEEP OF UTSA

Sept. 22, 2007

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington volleyball continued to send a message to the league as senior middle blocker Gina Kalb recorded nine kills and six total blocks and fellow senior middle blocker Ellen Murray added nine kills and three blocks as the Mavs won their fourth-straight match in defeating UTSA 30-19, 30-26, 30-23 Saturday afternoon at Texas Hall.

UTA (9-6, 2-0 SLC) jumped out early as they played nearly flawless volleyball by not recording an attack error until the end of the game. The Mavs finished the game with only four errors and 15 kills on 37 attempts. UTA used a 13-5 run to break game open that was culminated with a Liz Curry kill. The Mavs continued to press the issue and did not allow the lead to get under double digits the remainder of the game in the 30-19 decision.

UTSA (7-11, 0-2 SLC) did not roll over in the second game as they gave the Mavs everything they could handle and pulled to within one point at 20-19 on a kill from Kendra Rowland. UTA would get a pair of kills from Teena Sobczak to extend the lead to three and Dani Johnson pushed it to five with a service ace. The Runners would pull back to within three before Kalb ended the game with a kill.

The two teams were even through the early part of the third game before Kalb capped off a 13-7 run with a kill. The momentum would stay on the side of the Mavs as they continued to widen the margin and take the game 30-23.

Sobczak paced the balanced offensive attack with 14 kills. Murray and Kalb each added nine, while Torie Dacus chipped in eight. Johnson led the defense with 18 kills, with Sobczak not far behind with 15 and Curry 14. Kalb continued her dominance at the net with one solo block and five block assists.

The Mavs return to the court on Sept. 29 as they travel to take on SLC-rival Texas State. First serve is set for 2 p.m. at Strahan Coliseum.
