SAN MARCOS, Texas - UT Arlington volleyball won 3-1 (32-30, 18-30, 30-28, 30-27) in a Southland Conference match at Texas State on Saturday.
Sophomore Liz Curry led the Mavs with a season high 14 kills and career-high 18 digs. Outside hitter Teena Sobczak added a career-high four service aces and season-high 21 digs in the win. UTA boosts its record to 10-6 and stays unbeaten in the league at 3-0. Texas State drops to 9-6 and 2-1 in SLC play.
The two teams battled evenly to begin game one with four early ties before the Mavs ran off five consecutive points, two coming on attack errors by the Bobcats for the13-8 advantage. From there, the Mavericks used a 14-7 run to go up 27-16 after an ace by Sobczak. The `Cats rallied back to even the score 30-30, before committing an error to set-up game point for the Mavs. Sobczak laid down the kill to give UTA the win.
The Bobcats came out strong in game two jumping out to a 9-1 lead and never looked back.
In game three, UTA started strong with a 3-1 lead, but quickly fell behind 5-8. The Mavs battled back to within three (9-12) behind the service of Johnson. From there the Mavs pulled even with Bobcats before putting together a 4-0 run for the 18-15 advantage. The Bobcats came back to tie it 24-24, before scoring two unanswered points and forcing the UTA to burn a timeout. UTA came out of the huddle and went on a 5-2 run for the 30-28 win. For the game the Mavs hit .333 percent and put down 19 kills.
Texas State started game four with a 7-3 run, but UTA got back to within one behind a kills from Curry and an ace from middle blocker Gina Kalb. The Bobcats put together a 14-10 run to lead 21-16, but the Mavs put the match away with a 15-6 run of their own.
The Mavs will be back in action on Thursday, October 4 at 7 p.m. as they play host to Stephen F. Austin.
