Final Stats
SAN ANTONIO - - Danny Slinkman and Chad Comer had two hits each, and the Mavericks cut an early five-run deficit to two, but the rally fell short and the Mavericks suffered a 5-3 loss against UTSA in a Southland Conference game Friday in San Antonio.
Game 2 of the three-game conference series is today. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
UTSA (17-9, 5-2 in the SLC) struck first off Mavericks starter Ryan Robinson, jumping to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Roadrunners were helped by a leadoff walk and two Maverick fielding errors. UTSA added two more runs in the second when Roadrunners junior outfielder Michael Rockett hit a two-out triple down the left-field line to make it 4-0.
The Roadrunners got another run in the third on a Ryan Hutson run-scoring single through the left side.
From there, Robinson settled down and kept the Mavericks (7-17, 2-5) in the game long enough for them to mount a comeback. UTA, helped by a fielding error and wild pitch, got a run in the sixth to make it 5-1.
UTA continued the rally into the seventh. Mavericks designated hitter Slinkman led off the inning with a double, and Matt Otteman singled to drive him home. One batter later, Comer doubled down the left-field line to make it 5-3.
In the bottom of the inning, UTSA put runners on first and third with two outs when Mavericks coach Darin Thomas called on freshman right-hander Marcus Limon to relieve Robinson and end the threat. Limon forced a fly out to get UTA out of the inning unscathed and still within striking distance two runs down and facing reliever J.P. Holton.
Slinkman reached on a two-out single to right in the eighth, but the Mavericks couldn't take advantage. In the ninth, UTA went down in order.
Robinson (1-3) took the loss for the Mavericks. Vasquez (4-2) got the win for UTSA.
