Final Stats
ARLINGTON, Texas - - UT Arlington battled back from a two-run deficit to tie, but a five-run inning by Baylor in the seventh inning and seven more runs in the final two frames led to 14-4 loss in the non-conference game Tuesday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Mavericks (20-24) return to action at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday as they host TCU.
On Tuesday, the Mavericks and Bears (26-20) battled closely and cleanly until a disastrous final three innings. The seventh was enough to put the game out of reach. Mavs coach Darin Thomas used four pitchers in that inning as UTA hurlers had three walks and a wild pitch. Baylor scored its five runs on just three hits and took a 7-2 lead. Baylor got three more in the eighth and cruised to victory.
That seventh inning came immediately after UTA's offense tied the game.
Trailing 2-0 going into the bottom of the sixth, UTA took advantage of its best scoring chance to that point. Brock Wilson hit a one-out single and later advanced to third on a single up the middle by Michael Choice. UTA had runners on first and third with two out. Choice then stole second to put the tying run in scoring position. After battling through one of the longest at-bats of the day, Danny Slinkman drove both runners home with a single down the left-field line, and UTA had tied the game at two runs each.
Baylor took a 1-0 lead in the first off Drew Clementz; the Bears were helped by an infield single by Beamer Weems with one out to get things started. Dustin Dickerson followed with a single to right field, moving Weems into scoring position. Adam Hornung drove him home with a single to left.
From there, Clementz settled in nicely while the Mavericks tried to generate offense off starter Shawn Tolleson and reliever Tim Matthews (4-1). Tolleson's day ended after the second inning because Baylor coaches wanted him to get 30-40 pitches worth of work. Tolleson allowed no runs on no hits and struck out three.
Baylor scored in the fifth when Weems hit a one-out single to right, moving Hansen to third. Hansen reached earlier on the fielder's choice. Dickerson flight out, but it was deep enough to score the runner, and Baylor had a 2-0 lead. Clementz was relieved by Eamonn Donovan (0-2) to start the sixth after turning in a solid outing.
Clementz tossed five innings, allowed four hits and two runs. He struck out four and walked two.
