May 3, 2008

Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington extended its home winning streak to 11 games and tied the team's single-season record for home runs in a doubleheader sweep Saturday against Central Arkansas in Southland Conference softball.

The Mavericks (26-21, 19-10 SLC) got homers from seniors Katie Jones and Kristin Moore in game one as sophomore Cara Hulme (16-6) tossed a three-hit shutout for a 7-0 victory. Freshman Whitney Simpson and sophomore Samantha Chumchal went deep in a 6-1 win in game two, giving UTA 55 home runs this season to match the school record set in 2007.

The Mavericks out-hit the Bears (6-42, 4-24) 24-7 during the doubleheader and have not lost a game at Allan Saxe Stadium since March 26. Jones was 5-of-8 in the two games with a double, her sixth homer, three runs scored and two RBI. Chumchal was 4-for-5 on the day with three doubles, a home run, two runs scored and four RBI.

The three-game series concludes Sunday at noon. UTA will honor its seven seniors prior to the game.

Jones put Hulme and the Mavericks ahead early with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first inning in game one. Moore made it 2-0 with her first round-tripper of the season in the second inning, a line-drive smash down the right-field line. UTA extended its lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning on a two-run double by Chumchal, who advanced to third base on the throw home and continued home on an errant throw. The Mavericks scored two more in the sixth on RBI singles by Jones and senior Amanda Swofford.

Hulme recorded her sixth complete-game shutout. She struck out seven and walked three. The right-hander also worked the first five innings of game two, allowing one run on four hits with four more strikeouts. Senior Laura Jones (6-11) struck out three in two perfect innings of relief to earn the victory.

UTA took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when senior April Clougherty walked and scored on Chumchal's double to center field.

Central Arkansas tied it with an RBI single by Kayla Hitchcock in the fifth inning.

The Mavericks put away the Bears with a five-run sixth inning. Sophomore Heather Fortenberry singled and scored on Simpson's fourth homer in four games -- her ninth of the season. Chumchal made it back-to-back jacks with her third homer of the season. Three more UTA hits and a Central Arkansas error led to two more runs.
