ARLINGTON, Texas - Senior first baseman Rebecca Collom had a conversation with UTA sports information about the new players on the team, how the fall scrimmages turned out, and how she will handle being a leader on the team this year.
Phillip Long: How do you think the newcomers have been so far this year?
Rebecca Collom: They have been great. They are all working hard and have shown real good stuff at what we have done so far, like the games. In practice they really impress me and I am pretty excited about it.
PL: Do you think they will be able to step in right away?
RC: I think so. Brittany has an arm in the outfield, she is spot on. Teri was really good in the fall games so I feel like they will be able to help us right away.
PL: What did you take from the scrimmages this fall?
RC: The first two were rough. We have a lot of people that are returning but we are still trying to click as a whole. Once we got a few under our belts I felt like we were clicking a lot better and we got a lot better as they went along.
PL: Is there anything that you saw that you need to work on or anything you think does not need work?
RC: I would say keeping the intensity the whole time. We will do good in spurts but I feel like if we can keep that concept the whole time it will help us the most.
PL: Is there any particular player that has stood out to you so far?
RC: I would have to say Teri, our freshman pitcher. She was very excellent, she impressed me a lot. I was pretty excited that she stepped in and did her thing. That impressed me the most.
PL: Tell me what you think about being one of the leaders this season.
RC: Well, I talk all the time, so it is easy for me to step in and do that. I can do it, but I am not alone. There are some more seniors that will step in and help me and make this a pretty successful year.
PL: I noticed last year that you were one of the more vocal players on the field. Is that a first baseman thing or just how you are?
RC: I don't know. Coach wants us to do that and I am trying to do everything she wants me to do. I have a louder voice anyways, that is what I was given by God so hey, why not utilize what I have.
PL: So it is more your personality?
RC: Yeah and the first baseman before I got here, DJ, was helping me and telling me what I need to do and she was like that. So that is probably a combination of both my personality and her rubbing off on me.
