EDINBURG, Texas - Stephen F. Austin scored 12 runs in the first six innings en route to a 12-6 victory over UT Arlington in the opening game of the Al Ogletree Classic, hosted by UT Pan American in Edinburg, Texas. UT Arlington drops to 3-3 overall and Stephen F. Austin improves to 2-3 on the season.
Stephen F. Austin starter Erik Gregersen held the Mavericks' hitters to four base hits through the first six innings while the Lumberjacks tallied a run in the first and fourth innings, four runs in each the second and fifth innings and two runs in the sixth frame to take a 12-2 lead after six innings.
UT Arlington starter Rett Varner was taken out after pitching four innings, allowing nine hits, six runs (four earned) and three walks with one strikeout.
The Mavericks scored four of their six runs in the seventh inning as Tim Steggall, Michael Choice, Matt Otteman and Andrew Kainer all collected RBI.
Steggall drove in third baseman Evan Raley on a groundout to shortstop, which was followed by a RBI single to center field by Choice. Otteman, who finished the game going 2-for-5, scored Choice with a triple to right-center field. Kainer then followed with a run-scoring single to right which cut the Lumberjacks lead to six.
The Mavs then went down in order in both the eighth and ninth innings to give Gregersen his first victory of the season for SFA.
Choice was the only other Mavericks to tally multiple hits going 2-for-5.
UT Arlington will be back in action at the Al Ogletree Classic on Saturday, Feb. 28, taking on host-school UT Pan American at 7 p.m. at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
