UTA 1, TAMU-CC 8
Game one of a scheduled double-header against the Islanders of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi wasn't as successful as the Mavericks would of liked as they dropped an 8-1 decision at Allan Saxe Field. Junior Cara Hulme fell to 12-13 on the season after pitching a complete game, allowing eight runs on 10 hits while striking out three batters.
The Islanders quickly pounced on the Mavs in the top of the first scoring a run after Margo Hurdt ripped a single up the middle, driving in Andrea Simancas.
A&M-Corpus Christi added a solo run in the top of the fifth when Alaina Byars connected on a deep fly ball to left field for a sacrifice fly, scoring Cassie Redman from third.
The Mavericks lone run came in the bottom half of the frame on a controversial call which was challenged by the Islander's head coach and discussed by both coaches and umpires for 10 minutes. With runners on first and second, Heather Fortenberry hit into a fielder's choice that got Kelsey Kaiser out going to third but a bad throw to first sent the ball into the Mavericks dugout, advancing the runners a base and scoring Stinson.
The Islanders went on to score four runs in the top of the sixth and a pair in the seventh for an 8-1 win. Senior Jaimee Stinson led the Mavericks offensively recording a pair of hits and a run scored. Stinson was honored prior to the game in senior day for her hard work and dedication to the Maverick's program.
UTA 9, TAMU-CC 1
After falling in game one and game two to the Islanders, the Mavericks got the bats going in the final contest, connecting on 12 hits including six home runs from six different UTA players.
Samantha Chumchal was the first Maverick to connect on a two-run home run in the first frame followed by three consecutive homers by Whitney Simpson, Rebecca Collom and Cassandra Nordie in the second inning. Kari Karr and Cara Hulme connected on two-run homers in the third and fourth innings. All the Mavericks runs came off of home runs.
The Islanders only run came on a home run to left field by Margo Hurdt. UTA's nine runs was good enough to shutout A&M-Corpus Christi in five innings of action.
Fortenberry, Zink, Simpson, and Collom each recorded a pair of hits while four other Mavericks connected on a hit.
Nordie (2-2) picked up the win, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out one.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Tuesday, April 28 for a solo game against North Texas at Allan Saxe Field. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
