ARLINGTON, Tx. - UT Arlington junior Jasmine Walls was named the Southland Conference's women's outdoor track and field athlete of the year, the league office announced Thursday in conjunction with the release of the all-conference teams.
UT Arlington sophomore Cordero Gray was named Outstanding Track Performer after he was the high point scorer at the conference meet last weekend with 22.5 points in four events. Walls was also named the Outstanding Track Performer for the women.
Walls claimed four medals, each of the gold variety. The Pearland (Texas) High School product pulled off the sprint-distance double at the conference meet, winning the 100 and 200 dashes, a feat she also accomplished as a sophomore, after helping the Mavericks to first place in the 400 and 1,600 relays. The 2008 conference meet's high-point scorer with 22.75, Walls could not quite pull off her repeat bid to again total the most individual points, but she did best her previous year's total with a mark of 25. In the 100, Walls edged past teammate LaDoreal Thompson for a first-place time of 11.51. Later in the 200, Walls ran a first-place time of 23.57, winning by half-second. UT Arlington also netted a men's superlative thanks to Gray's top performances in the sprinting events.
A native of Arlington, Texas, Gray claimed gold in the 100 and silver in the 200 while also running for the Mavericks during their 400 relay victory and runner-up finish in the 1,600 relay.
The annual Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Awards are voted on by the league's respective men's and women's head coaches and are based on the performances of the student-athletes' outdoor track and field season. The All-Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field teams are based on order of finish at the conference outdoor meet.
