ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington didn't waste time collecting its second win at the UT Arlington Hilton Invitational with a 25-7, 25-14, 25-18, victory over Texas Southern that lasted only 53 minutes on Saturday afternoon at Texas Hall. UT Arlington (4-7) improves to 2-0 in the two-day tournament while Texas Southern (5-8) falls to 0-2.
Junior setter Raegan Daniel finished with 30 assists, eight digs and seven kills to lead the Mavericks to the victory. Nine Mavs recorded a kill as Bianca Sauls added eight kills, eight digs and five assists and Alicia Shaffer notched eight kills, eight digs and tallied a career-high six blocks.
UT Arlington recorded a season-high 12 team blocks as Emily Shearin (5 blocks) and Eld-hah Kaswatuka (5 blocks) joined Shaffer with at least five blocks.
The Mavericks controlled the match from the get go with a 19-3 lead in the first set. Shaffer, Shearin, Sauls and Christy Driscoll all posted at least a pair of kills in the set while the Mavs hit .417 (12 kills - 2 errors - 24 attacks) as a team. UT Arlington went on to the 25-7 victory in the set with Sauls leading the way with three kills on five swings.
Texas Southern, meanwhile, struggled to a -.083 hitting percentage (5 kills - 7 errors - 24 attacks) in the frame.
UT Arlington kept its momentum rolling in the second set with a .344 hitting percentage led by Sauls, who notched three kills and Daniel who posted four kills, nine assists and four digs in the set.
The Mavs grabbed their second straight home win with a .333 hitting percentage (17 kills - 4 errors - 39 attacks) in the third set. UT Arlington actually trailed 9-10 before finished the set on a 16-8 run.
Tara Frantz had six kills, three blocks and two digs, Kaswatuka finished with five kills and five blocks and Jessica Jiles entered in the third set and finished with two kills on two swings.
UT Arlington will play for the tournament championship this evening at 7:30 p.m. against TCU.
