ARLINGTON, Texas - After a hard few days at the Midland Invitational last weekend, the UTA men's and women's tennis teams look forward to playing again this weekend at the Baylor and Rice Invitational's.
When asked about how the athletes played last weekend, Assistant Coach Marco Matteucci thinks they "need to step up physically, these are tougher tournaments and we weren't as ready as we could be."
Assistant Coach Marco Matteucci believes that the way the players perform tends to mean more than the overall wins and losses.
"Overall, how they play, how much they push themselves, and play mentally tough."
Usually the first tournament of the year is full of jitters and nervousness. But now that that is out of the way, the next tournament could go a little better.
"It could be," said Assistant Coach Matteucci. "Playing against some of the best of the country is always tough though."
This weekend is going to be a tough test for both squads since top teams from around the country will be attending. It will also be an opportunity for the teams to have a look at a few schools from the Southland Conference.
Last weekend, the Mavericks doubles teams had a strong showing, winning two matches and coming up just short in the third and Dmitry Minkin also had a strong showing in singles.
