BEAUMONT, Tex. - Amanda Aguilera posted a double-double but UT Arlington faltered after a quick start, enabling Lamar to come away with a 3-1 win Saturday afternoon at McDonald Gym.
The Mavericks dominated the first set. However, Lamar regrouped and UTA's attack, which started so crisp, sputtered in the final three games. That allowed the Cardinals to come out with a 15-25, 25-23, 25-12, 25-22 victory.
"We passed the ball poorly the entire match," UTA coach Diane Seymour said. "It's disappointing, for sure. Our passing put us on our heels because it gave us no offense to put up against them."
Lamar (8-8, 4-1 SLC) finished the match with seven aces - the second-highest total the Mavs have allowed this season.
Aguilera led the Mavericks with a match-high 17 kills to go along with her team-best 15 digs.
Libero Alicia Shaffer finished with 11 digs. Though she finished in double figures, the match broke Shaffer's impressive four-match streak with 24-plus digs.
Bianca Sauls also had 10 digs.
Seymour said UT Arlington's defense was a significant issue the entire match. Not only did the Mavericks pass poorly, they couldn't get their usually reliable blocking game on track. They finished the match with just three total blocks.
"The two things that stood out was the receiving part - that we had more receiving errors than they did - and the blocking part," Seymour said. "Those are two areas where we have usually done better than our opponents. Whenever we were winning matches, we would out-block them and we certainly wouldn't get aced off the court."
Tina Hobbs led the Cardinals with 15 kills and Kaleigh Wright finished with a match-high 17 digs. Lamar also posted nine blocks, led by five from Hobbs and Megan McStravick.
Tara Frantz finished with a double-digit kill total for UT Arlington, posting 11. Setter Raegan Daniel had 32 assists.
The Mavs (8-10, 2-2) now return home from their four-match road trip. They start their own four-match home streak Wednesday night when they host Texas State at Texas Hall at 7 p.m.
