ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington men and women completed its first outdoor meet of the season at the TCU Horned Frog invitational with successful results on Friday.
The Mavericks placed first overall in three running events. Caroline Erlingson placed first in the Women 1500 Meter Run with a time of 4:42. Erlingson wasn't alone as three other Mavericks placed right behind her at second, third and fourth place. Jerono Patrober (4:43), Jennifer Carey (4:50) and Perri Ford (4:51) finished second, third and fourth respectively.
Another longer distance event was good to the Mavericks as Kisha Gaspard took first place in the Women 800 Meter Run with a time of 2:17. Danisha Hicks (2:21) and Marissa Paz (2:33) were the only other Mavs to finish in the top five.
All-Americans Cordero Gray and Jasmine Walls fared well. Walls finished sixth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.71. Gray finished in third place in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.26. Gray was only six hundredths of a second off the pace of the leader, Jared Connaughton.
Walls also ran in the 200 Meter Dash and finished behind teammate Antonia Hopkins to place fifth with a time of 24.13. Gray's only other event was the Men 4x100 Meter Relay.
Gray joined Juan Lewis, Aundrea Williams and Andrew Pettis to finish with a time of 40.52, good enough for second.
The only other event UTA placed first in was the Women 4x400 Meter Relay. DeAndrea Smith, Brittany Culbertson, Megan Turner and Antonia Hopkins finished with a combined time of 3:50.
The group narrowly beat out the North Texas runners, who finished with a time of 3:51. Hopkins rounded out her strong day with a third place finish in the 400 Meter Dash with a time of 56.47.
Andrew Pettis, Isiah Clements, Peter Samuels and Anthony Rene finished third in the Men 4x400 Meter relay.
Renan Palma finished second in the Men 110 Meter Hurdles with a time of 14.25.
Ozie Hood fared well in the Men 800 Meter Run with a time of 1:56.55, good enough for third place. Rene finished right behind him at fourth place with a time of 1:56.61.
Eric Montou, the freshman who preformed strong in cross country, had a strong showing in the Men 3000 Meter Run. Montou finished second with a time of 8:55.
The Mavericks also fared well in the limited field events they participated in. Keaton Mata and Lionel Mungwari finished one-two in the Long Jump. Mata's distance was 6.83m while Mungwari's was 6.77m.
Lauren Marks placed third in the Women Pole Vault with a distance of 3.30m. Her counterpart, Chris Machisak for the men, finished second in the Pole Vault with a distance of 4.65m.
Ivan Storic rounded out the successful meet with a second place finish in the Men Javelin Throw with a distance of 59.66m.
The Mavericks also had three athletes attend the Angelo State University Spring Break meet. The women had two athletes compete in the heptathlon while the men sent one to compete in the decathlon. Kimberly Strong finished eighth overall and was followed by Raquel Kilgore, who finished fifteenth. Jared Cloud was the lone athlete from the men's team. Cloud finished ninth overall in the men's decathlon.
Next up for the men and women will be UTA's very own Bobby Lane UT-Arlington Invitational. The meet will be in Arlington and start on March 26.
