FORT WORTH, Texas - UT Arlington freshman right fielder Preston Beck was a home run short of the cycle in the Mavericks' 10-3 loss at No. 11 TCU Tuesday night in front of 2,651 fans at Lupton Stadium.
The Mavericks (12-13) outhit the Horned Frogs (18-5) 13-11, but TCU took advantage of six free bases issued by the UTA pitching staff, and by two errors which both led to runs.
With the Horned Frogs clinging to a 1-0 lead, UT Arlington scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Beck led off the inning with a triple to center field and scored a batter later on Shane Hopkins' RBI single to center field. Later in the inning, UTA took the lead with a two-out RBI single through the left side by first baseman Jordan Vaughn.
Vaughn (3-for-5), Beck (3-for-5) and Hopkins (3-for-5) all led the Mavericks with three hits apiece. It was Vaughn and Hopkins' first career three-hit performance while Beck tallied his second three-hit game of the season.
TCU answered immediately with three runs in the fourth and also scored three runs in each the sixth and seventh innings to put the game away.
Junior left-handed pitcher Mark Picca (1-2) took the loss for the Mavericks throwing 4.0 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on five base hits while allowing two walks. The Mavericks threw four pitchers in the game as Garrett Laird (2.0 innings), Calan Pritchard (1.0 inning) and Sam Hansen (1.0 inning) all made an appearance.
TCU `s Tyler Lockwood (2-2) earned the victory out of the bullpen tossing 3.0 innings and giving up seven hits and two runs with three strikeouts.
UT Arlington's third run came with an RBI single through the left side by Michael Choice in the sixth inning. Choice scored shortstop Jesse Payne who led off the frame with a walk.
Choice has now reached base safely in 37 straight games dating back to last season. The junior All-American reached base four times in five plate appearances against TCU with two walks, a single and reached base on an error in the first inning. Choice is batting .458 (11-for-24) in six career games against TCU.
Freshman Jake Pinchback hit an infield single to the shortstop in the fourth inning to record his first collegiate base hit in his first career start in left field. Second baseman Cody Dyvig notched his fourth multi-hit game of the season going 2-for-5 with a run scored.
UT Arlington returns home for a three-game series with Nicholls on Thursday, April 1, with first pitch set at 6:30 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark. The series will continue Friday at 6:30 p.m. and will conclude on Saturday with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
