ARLINGTON, Texas - Junior All-American Michael Choice went 2-for-3 with an RBI while reaching base safely for the 41st consecutive game while UT Arlington fell 7-4 against Oral Roberts at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Mavericks (14-15) drop their second straight midweek game while Oral Roberts (12-13) knocked off its second Texas opponent in two weeks on the road after defeating then-No. 7 Texas, 3-2 in Austin last Tuesday.
Oral Roberts scored seven runs in six separate innings and answered immediately after each time the Mavericks plated runs.
Choice (2-for-3, run, RBI) and Preston Beck (2-for-4, run) led the way for a UT Arlington at the plate. Second baseman Cody Dyvig went 1-for-4 with a team leading two RBI while freshman left fielder Taylor Mabra (1-for-4, run) was the only other UTA player with a base hit.
The Mavericks tallied six base hits as a team while their 7-through-9-hole batters went a combined 1-for-12.
Golden Eagles relief pitcher Sean Johnson (1-0) won his first game of the season pitching 3.0 innings and allowing only one run on a pair of hits with four strikeouts. Johnson pitched the sixth, seventh and eighth innings for ORU.
UT Arlington reliever Mark Picca (1-3) took the loss allowing three runs on four base hits in 2.0 innings with two strikeouts.
ORU left fielder Chris Elder hit his third home run of the season to put the Golden Eagles up early 1-0 in the second inning. The Mavericks came right back and took the lead with a two-run single to right-center field by Dyvig, giving the Mavs a 2-1 advantage.
Oral Roberts then scored a run in the third and fourth and two in the fifth on a total of six base hits to grab a 5-3 lead. The Golden Eagles would never look back as the Mavericks tallied only two base hits the final six innings, with both singles by Choice and Beck coming in the eighth inning.
Maverick catcher Chad Comer scored the second run of the game for the Mavericks but was unable to continue his career-high hit streak going 0-for-2 with a walk and a hit by pitch. Comer's hit streak ended at 16 games. Comer reached base safely in three out of his four at-bats also reaching base on a fielding error by ORU second baseman Colby Price in the eighth inning.
UT Arlington will be back in Southland Conference competition this weekend on the road at No. 22 Southeastern Louisiana (24-6) for a three-game series starting Friday, April 9, at 6 p.m. in Hammond, La. The series will continue Saturday (2 p.m.) and will conclude on Sunday (1 p.m.).
